Platform pedals vs clipless pedals which is best?

There are a lot of parts on a bike that add to or decrease your efficiency and comfort. One of the parts that can be overlooked is your choice pedal type. Pedals may seem inconsequential, but having the right pedal for your riding style is actually very important. This article may help answer some questions you have.
When buying a new bike or upgrading an existing one, many cyclists ask if they should buy platform pedals, toe clip pedals, or what are called clipless pedals. I’m only going to address the difference between platform pedals and clipless pedals here. First, I want to address the name clipless, which seems to be a misnomer. The name clipless derives from pedals that do not use toe clips but use a plate at the bottom of a special bicycling shoe. You will hear an audible click when engaging into clipless pedals.
I will go through the pros and cons of each.
Pros of Clipless Pedals
1. You can pedal in a more perfect circle with clipless pedals because you are able to pull up on the pedals - not just mash down. In doing so you will be able to ride at least one gear higher, which means you will go faster when you want.
2. You can buy shoes that will allow air flow and maximize power efficiency.
3. You can buy light clipless pedals made with titanium axles.
4. You can buy pedals with lots of float. Float is the amount of movement your foot has before the shoe cleat releases from the pedal.
Cons of Clipless Pedals
1. They cost more than platform pedals.
2. You need to buy special shoes with cleats on the bottom.
3. You need to know how much float is best for you. Pedals with no float or too much float can cause joint problems.
4. Many shoes use stiff carbon soles, which can be very uncomfortable. Many bigger guys use plastic soles to minimize this discomfort.
5. You must make sure that the spring tension of the cleat is adjusted so that it releases if you have an accident.
Pros of Platform Pedals
1. Using platform pedals is a super chill way to ride - you can ride in flip flops or barefoot.
2. Platform pedals are a very cost efficient choice.
3. With platform pedals your foot can move around (float) on the pedal, which is good for your joints.
Cons of Platform Pedals
1. Platform pedals are not very efficient.
2. Platform pedals are heavier than many clipless systems.
In short, platform pedals are perfect for recreational riders. However, they are not as efficient for racing or touring. If you are looking to join group rides get a pair of shoes with cleats and clipless pedals. To make sure you are confident with them, spend 15 minutes getting in and out by balancing yourself in a doorway, and make sure set the spring tension so it will allow you to release from the pedal without too much force.
