Front Derailleurs on a Folder

Many people ask is 8, 9, 10 speeds enough? The answer depends on your needs. We include front derailleur braze-ons on all derailleur based bikes. Therefore riders can double or triple the number of gears, should they??

In general keep the bike the way its configured. It's perfect in many ways, and the gear range is awesome. If you need a lower gear consider putting a smaller chainring up front. Going with a double ( or triple ) up front will increase the risk of chain drops when folding ( due to more slack on the chain ). Sometimes the chain can get wedged in really bad. Adding weight, cost, and increasing risk when folding is not ideal. Therefore most riders should stay away from multi chainring setups.

However, some riders need the gears. Riders that live in the mountains will need extra gears with high probability, and extra chainring should do the trick. Loaded touring requires small gear increments to minimize damage to ones joints. Therefore a double chainring is essentially required.

Overall riders should keep a single ring on a folder unless they live in the mountains, or do loaded touring.
