Cranks what is the difference

As of today all of our bikes use cold forged cranks. What does that mean? Is it better then other cranks? why? I hope to answer these questions.
Cold forged cranks were forged from molten aluminum as one piece. This means that they are super strong and stiff. The probability of breaking a cold forged crank is small...really really small. Additionally they are stiff which means they are ideal for power transfer. The majority of power you generate in your legs will go towards moving the bike. Additionally they are beautiful to watch, the curves are smooth, like a work of art.
Non-cold forged cranks come in two varieties. One with replaceable chainring ( on mid range bikes ), and non replaceable chainring on lower end models. These cranks normally weld a piece of steel from the crank to the chainring. These flex due to a weak design, hence power loss can be severe. Corrosion maybe an issue due to welding and the use of different metals ( aluminum cranks and steel spider ). Aesthetically, these cranks look cheap and do not provide much confidence.
Overall, cold forged cranks are spec'd on nicer bikes. It's not necessary, but nice to have for performance and beauty.
