Other than sand, mud a a big risk for folding bikes. The small front wheel sinks quickly in mud. Otherwise you need to learn to keep your butt behind the saddle for stability. Small wheel bikes have a propensity to throw the rider off the bikes upon impact with a large obstacle. Pulling ones butt back and down minimizes the "throw" risk.
