Brake Levers Quality & Adjusting their position

Posted by Dr. Yan Lyansky on Nov 11th 2017

All bake levers operate the same way. Quality levers are tight at the hinge, while lower quality models have play at the hinge. Additionally if the bushing seems inadequate to last a long time, then it would also be considered low end.

Adjusting a brake lever. There are two adjustments on a brake lever.

1. The point that the lever engages: This should occur at a comfortable distance. It should never be too far or too close to the handlebar. Otherwise your hands will feel premature strain ( if it's too far ) or the bars could restrict the brakes ( if it's too close )

In order to adjust the throw ( distance from the handlebar ) turn the barrel adjuster on the lever clockwise to to get engagement further from the handlebar, or turn counter clockwise to get engagement closer.

2. The angle the brakes levers needs to be checked. They should be on a straight ray emanating from the shoulder. This is adjusted by rotating the levers up or down on the handlebars.
